I just started reading personal finance blogs and that sparked a few quick thoughts.

David O’Reilly, head of Chevron, seems absolutely shocked that people drive faster than 55mph because it wastes so much gas. I’d kind of forgotten that’s a financial and environmental tip. Although I’m also picturing an insanely wealthy executive driving his Ferrari in the slow lane to “save money.”

Another tip, gardening saves you money because you can make a gifts out of the result and makes you money because it increases the value of your home. Be on the lookout for a Plum Rum Marmalade from my garden.

Not the most interesting reading but it sparked an idea. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could hold a celebration every time you did something right with your money and people could join in and cheer you on.

8.9% drop in home sales in June. I just bought the second edition of Irrational Exuberance because of its updates on the housing market.

Claim that Warren Buffet is investing in ConocoPhillips, GE, and UPS. I’ll have to check those out because I’m such a Buffet fanboy (he’s a big reason Grinnell College was so cheap er… not as expensive as it could have been).

Rather than paying extra for lean ground beef you can buy the fatty stuff and then rinse it with water. That actually rinses several percentage points of fat away. This reminds me of an aunt-of-a-friend who picked stems off her cherries before checking out, “I don’t eat the stems, I don’t pay for the stems.”
