Be interesting.

I’m totally digging The MBA Podcast from the University of San Francisco and it’s changing the way I think about that school. I grew up in San Francisco and every indication I’ve had was that USF stopped being relevant in 1956 when Bill Russell graduated. Guess I was wrong. Check out the William Quigley interview for a taste (backer of Paypal).

The Berkeley HAAS MBA program on the other hand has such interesting podcasts as “tips for the application process” and “help with the financial aid options and process.” They’ve taken what should be a two-page pamphlet and turned it into a 30-minute program.

Which reminds me of this suddenly in vogue quote:

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Berkeley is podcasting for people who want to be led. USF is podcasting for people who want to be leaders.

Mark Mangano is the author of Sales Force Watch, the top blog for independent Sales Force News, and Scott Hemmeter is the author of the Perspectives on Salesforce blog and also a successful Salesforce consultant.

I was at the Dreamforce ’06 Conference investigating AppExchange, Saleforce.com’s 3rd party development and distribution platform because I was curious about opportunities for lone consultants and very small companies to produce software for the business web.

Scott and Mark were kind enough to talk to me about how many of the barriers to entry have dropped and how easy it is to get started in this world.

Todd Harrison is a redneck engineer. Veronica Harrison is an eighth grade robotics and electronics hacker. They teamed up to add heat exchange coils to a gas grill in order to heat their swimming pool. The best part is that their contraption breaks back down to regular grill in minutes so that they can serve burgers at the requisite pool party.

John Davi, Communications Director of CalCars.org, talks about the challenges of getting manufacturers to produce plug-in hybrids, cars that run 100% electric for local travel but still have unlimited gasoline range. I caught up with him at Maker Faire while he was making a documentary on how to do your own plug-in hybrid Prius conversion.

Dorrian gave all of the makers at Maker Faire informational text-message spaces. Try texting ‘maker143’ to 66937.

He’s recreated the domain name business but in SMS, so obviously he’s a genious. He gave me a few minutes to explain his company Mozes and to talk about Maker Faire.

Now that we’ve finished our first sprint I’ve figured out the answer to my question, “do we need a break between sprints?” Yes.

Our answer included a hackathon modeled after JotSpot’s. Tons of fun. I can’t recommend this enough! Noah made a video so that all the happy details can go online at some point. Here was my entry:

Podcast GMap. I took our podcast data, located it according to host ip, then put it into a google map. Then I added popups with the Odeo player. The data is static, the ip address geo data is spotty, and the underlying podcast data comes from a one time database dump. But what the heck, I had fun. Plus note the gubernator podcast coming from sacramento.

Special thanks to Perl Wizard Rich Gibson and Schuyler Erle for their Google Maps Hacks book.

Everyone else made really awesome hacks. I’ll be sure to call them out as they get released.

I’ve really really enjoyed Cory Doctorow’s podcast renditions of his short stories. However, by far my favorite was this ‘When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth’ which you can get directly from his site or below in these Odeo players.

Maybe I missed this, or maybe it didn’t get as much attention as it deserved. Podscope lets you search for words within podcasts based on their speech to text conversions. That’s so cool!
